About Jane

Jane AustenJane Austen was born the seventh child to Rev George and Cassandra Austen on December 16, 1775.

She grew to become one of England’s most widely enjoyed female novelists. Jane is responsible for writing Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park.

It is less known that Jane Austen was also an accomplished needle woman and several examples of her work, including a coverlet which she sewed together  with her mother and beloved only sister, Cassandra are still exhibited at her former home in Chawton.

Jane was part of a large and close family, and her untimely death on 18th July, 1817 from Addisons disease caused her family great grief . She was only 41 years of age, and we are left to only imagine what else she would have gone on to create if she had lived longer.

Jane is buried in Winchester Cathedral.
